![]() The 991.2 PDK introduced in 2017 is substantially changed and it's not clear how much of this info applies. These changes include addition of a gear oil pump and cooler, a gear oil temp sensor, sealed clutch updates, and the option for a true locking differential (including an additional solenoid and pressure sensor to engage/disengage). The PDK did see minor updates for the 991.1/981.1 in 2013 but is still generally the same transmission. (Foreword: This post was written with regard to the 997.2 PDK but in almost all cases directly applies to the 987.2 PDK also. I found a copy of it in the wild and can forward to those interested. Unfortunately it looks like this paper is now pay-walled. An excellent technical white paper from the manufacturer (ZF) can be found here: 911 Turbos use a ZF model 7DT70 which is identical to the ZDT45 except it has a heavy duty clutch, strengthened major components, and slightly different gear ratios. It gives background into the various aspects of the PDK’s operation that is helpful in understanding servicing the PDK:įor reference the PDK model used in the Carreras (and also Boxsters and Caymans) is a ZF model 7DT45. I do caution that this info below has been compiled from my research and I can’t guarantee it’s 100% accurate, but I do believe it’s reliable. Although this transmission is complex, it’s not overly complicated and is serviceable in many ways that aren’t readily documented (intentionally I’ve come to believe). This is pretty frightening as items like solenoids fail all the time, like any other electro-mechanical device they wear out.įortunately, this just isn’t the case and this transmission is very repairable. There have been many claims that the PDK is not serviceable but must be replaced in the event of pretty much any failure (i.e. I was considering an extended warranty, mainly due to PDK replacement cost ($15k to $25k depending on the PDK source). I’ve had my 997.2 with PDK for few months now after switching from a 6MT. Apologies for the length of this but I wanted to put it all in one place for reference. That post prompted me to document what I’ve found regarding PDK serviceability. There was recently a post where a Rennlister sold his 997.2 GTS at a significant loss after his PDK failed. I'll be adding new info to the post as it becomes available. Hopefully it can also be used as a resource for independent mechanics who are currently unwilling to service the PDK. This post is aimed at those who refuse to accept this, and provide experienced DIY'ers the info needed to save themselves a boatload of money. After ten years in service Porsche still won't make this information available, instead insisting owners drop $15k to $20k on a replacement transmission. After it ran for a couple minutes, it all the sudden started to work.Introduction: This post documents what I've learned regarding PDK internals, parts prone to failure, access to those parts, where to get replacements, and generally how to fix a failed PDK yourself. He started it up after work and the same issue occurred. Would a bad temp sensor cause the transmission to act like it's in neutral and then reset itself when the truck was turned off? The battery is over 5 years old and these issues just started two weeks ago.Ĭould these two issues be related? He has a new trans temp sensor ready to go in this weekend. He isn't hearing any strange noises and when it drives, it feels great according to him. He put a jump box on, the truck fired right up and moved like normal when he put it in gear. He turned the truck off, but it wouldn't start, just cranked. This morning he went to go to work, truck started fine but would not move in any gear. After sitting for a couple days, he drove the truck into town and the light turned off while he was driving. When he made the drive to Missoula last week, the CEL came on again with the same code. He drove the truck for about a week without issue. He let the truck sit for a couple days and when he turned it back on, the CEL was off. A couple weeks ago his check engine light came on and the code was for the trans temp sensor.
